A. Smith Bowman Distillery, Virginia’s oldest continuously operating distillery, was founded in 1934 immediately following Prohibition. While originally located on the Bowman family’s Sunset Hills Farm, the distillery relocated to Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1988.

The distillery is renowned for its award-winning, handcrafted small-batch and single-barrel bourbons, including World’s Best Bourbon accolades. Their unique process involves sourcing distillate (believed to be from Buffalo Trace, a Sazerac sister company), then re-distilling it up to three times in their copper stills (“Mary” and “George”), and finally aging it in their own Virginia rickhouses. This re-distillation and local aging creates a distinctive, refined spirit. A. Smith Bowman maintains a “pioneer spirit” by continuously releasing limited-edition experimental whiskeys under the Abraham Bowman label.
